Yangon is the
largest city and former capital of Myanmar. The city
is located at the convergence of the Yangon and Bago
Rivers about 30 km away from the Gulf of Martaban.
It is so evergreen and cool with lush tropical
trees, shady parks and beautiful lakes it has earned
the name of "The Garden City of the East".
Yangon was founded by King Alaungpaya on the site of
a small town called Dagon when he conquered lower
Myanmar in 1755. He changed its name to Yangon,
which means "End of Strife", but was anglicized as
Rangoon by the British when they annexed Myanmar in
1885. The present day Yangon covers an area of 350
sq.km with a population of over 5 million.
From miles away on ship or plane approaching the
city, you will see a golden tower stabbing the sky.
This is the Shwedagon Pagoda, the largest and oldest
temple of its kind. Towering almost 100 metres above
the green city, this 2,500 years old shrine is a
place of pilgrimage for Buddhists from many lands
and is the very symbol of why Myanmar is called "The
Golden Land".
Other interesting
places in Yangon includes Sule Pagoda in bustling
downtown area; Botataung Pagoda - only pagoda in the
world where you can see the real hair relic of Lord
Buddha; National Museum that exhibit the lion throne
of the last Myanmar king; National Races Village
where you can see significent symbols & buildings of
national races. |
